If you don’t know how to create and manage tab groups in Safari 15 for macOS, we are going to help you out. The arrival of the new version of Safari was announced at WWDC21 to macOS Big Sur and Catalina before the arrival of macOS Monterey. One of the most interesting features of this version is the tab groups. After a few days of testing, we are going to explain everything in detail.
How to create and manage tab groups in Safari 15 for macOS?
Safari’s tab groups allow you to classify tabs depending on what you do with them. For example, you can have one group of tabs to show various websites that you use to search for and buy a gift, and another group to bring your social media accounts together and so on. This way, instead of displaying all tabs at all times, you will only see the ones you are interested in.
It is really easy to create and manage tab groups in Safari 15 for macOS. First of all, make sure you have the latest version of Safari (version 15) installed on your Mac. You can update it from System Preferences, under the Software Update tab. You do not need a reboot after this. After you have the latest version just follow these steps:
- Open Safari.
- Go to the File menu.
- Click on New Empty Tab Group.
The group will be created, and Safari will show you a list of the tab groups you use. You can choose a custom name for each specific tab group.
The tab group will be shown in blue. You are now in this group, and therefore all the tabs you open will be stored in that tab group. If it bothers you, you can hide Safari’s sidebar and access the tab groups using the new button on its toolbar.
Apart from each tab group, you are always going to have the “general” tabs not assigned to groups. Whenever you select a group, its tabs will be shown and the rest will be hidden. To delete a group of tabs just access that group and go to the menu File and click on Delete tab group.
Note that those tab groups are synced with iCloud, so they will also appear on your iPhone and iPad (and other Macs). This way you’ve learned how to create and manage tab groups in Safari 15 for macOS, as you can see the process is really simple. Try it out now!
