Water-resistance is one of the most striking features of Android and iOS phones, although it is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, having that resistance gives some security to accidental situations in which some liquid is poured on the device or ends up splashed by mistake.
But at the same time, this security can end up being excessive and users can put the integrity of their phones at risk with the reasoning that being water-resistant they will withstand anything. What happens is that the water-resistance has well-marked limits and any value above can leave the phone unusable.
If you have a device and you think it may be water-resistant, before testing it by submerging it in the pool it is best to consult the manufacturer’s website. But you can also do it using an application. Yes, you read that right. You can test the water resistance using an app found in the Play Store.
The app is called Water Resistance Tester and has been discovered by Reddit users. It is compatible with a wide variety of Android phones, although it has not been possible to install it on the OnePlus 7 Pro. This application checks whether the phone has IP67 and IP68 certification, the methodology it uses is through the sensors and, more specifically, the barometer.
The barometer is the sensor used to check the air pressure to which the device is exposed. When the SIM tray is removed, the test fails, as this tray is a huge hole through which elements that are not at all beneficial for the devices can be introduced.
The truth is that it is an interesting application of the barometer for Android, which far from being the physical device and full of metal components, is a digital sensor that is included inside the device. If you are curious you can try the app and check if your device is water-resistant.
Of course, if the application says it is water-resistant. That does not indicate that it is necessary to submerge it in pools or beaches with the excuse of resistance. You can be left without an Android phone and nobody wants that.
