Samsung believes that in the future our phones could also act as bracelets or smartwatches.

Perhaps it will not be necessary to buy a smartphone and a smartwatch separately in the future because we will have both in one device, or at least that’s what Samsung thinks in a recently discovered patent.

Samsung has always been known for being one of the first technology companies to release new technologies, they already did it in different bets on folding screens, and now we could see something totally innovative.

Samsung has patented a smartphone with a detachable screen that could even be wrapped around the wrist, to act like a smartwatch or bracelet. The patent while filed in 2018, has just been made public.

The patent was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and shows different images where we observe that the top of the phone can be detached and wrapped around curved surfaces such as our wrist.

A different aspect is that it seems to wrap over the top of the hand, so it is not completely fixed to the wrist. Reportedly, the detachable part has two buttons on the left panel, possibly for more precise navigation.

What sets it apart from other phones is the top area with a wrap-around display that could show content such as date, time, and notifications received on the phone. The wrap-around screen would have to be connected to the main phone via magnets or connectors.

The patent description notes that “an ornamental design for a display device” is provided.

It seems rather unlikely that we will see this type of technology on the market in the short term, but it is clear that large technology companies already have in mind devices that could be the protagonists of the next decade.
