Airbnb generates more than 300,000 jobs around the world. The popularity of the vacation rental platform has led to the creation of more than 300,000 jobs worldwide.
A recent study by Oxford economics concludes that the popular vacation rental platform generates more than 300,000 jobs worldwide. Specifically, Barcelona is one of the cities with more indirect employment generated by Airbnb users.
The study distributes the generation of employment by the activity derived from Airbnb as follows:
- Catering: 100,000 jobs
- Retail: 95,000 jobs
- Transportation: 50,000 jobs
- Leisure: 40,000 jobs
The report refers to data from 2019, with 83 million tourists, only behind France. The 10 global destinations where the Airbnb platform has generated the most jobs are as follows:
- Paris: 50,800 jobs
- Colombia: 44,400 jobs
- Budapest: 17,700 jobs
- New York: 16,400 jobs
- Manila: 15,900 jobs
- Milan: 14,300 jobs
- Lisbon: 13,400 jobs
- Los Angeles: 13,100 jobs
- Mexico: 12,600 jobs
- Barcelona: 9,600 jobs
In the case of Barcelona, 2,800 of these jobs would have remained in the restaurant sector and about 3,000 in the local commerce sector. These data suggest that the tourism and catering sector may experience an important boost to its recovery thanks to Airbnb.
On the other hand, Airbnb has released a statement in which it affirms that for more than 40% of its hosts, the income obtained through the platform has contributed in an essential way to their economic sustenance during the pandemic, allocating more than half of the income obtained in improvements to their homes.
