“Match Insights – Powered by Oracle Cloud will include:
- Average Formation: Monitors the position of all players, both when their team has possession of the ball and when they don’t. This model highlights the different ways teams position themselves when attacking and defending. During the match, fans will be able to see how each team reacts to their opponent’s tactics, helping viewers better understand the strategies behind each style of play.
- Live Win Probability: This statistic will tell even more about the story of a team’s performance by calculating a team’s chances of getting a win or a draw by simulating the match 100,000 times. The model is based on four years of match data and takes into account whether the team is playing away or at home, the current score, penalties awarded, players on the field, red cards, and time remaining in the game.
- Momentum Tracker: Measures the probability of the team in possession of the ball to convert it into a goal within 10 seconds. The results are based on data from thousands of historical matches and the last five moves of the team in possession of the ball. The model incorporates the results of passes, attacks, fouls, and the location in which each occurred.
The combination of Oracle’s expertise in machine learning with the Premier League’s wealth of soccer data represents a significant fusion of technology and sport, said Ariel Kelman, Oracle executive vice president, and chief marketing officer. The margins for error in the Premier League are minimal, so data is crucial to uncovering the key moments and stories of each match. Because it’s those stories that unite fans and further ignite their passion for the game.
Additional match insights will be added during the 2021/2022 Premier League season, which kicks off on August 14.
