Google has just announced on its official blog the future arrival of more than 100 AI-supported features for Google Maps. The company states that some of the updates will start arriving later this year.
Google Maps will have new AI-supported features to guide you
First, the company is improving Live View, its augmented reality navigation feature that allows users to see navigation directions overlaid on top of the real world. Now, this feature is becoming more useful in indoor locations, so instead of simply looking for places while walking outside, Google Maps can guide us inside places like airports and shopping malls.
At the moment, this feature is only available now in some shopping malls in Chicago, Long Island, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle, with airports, shopping malls, and transit stations in Tokyo and Zurich coming in the next few months, and other major cities in the future.
According to Google, this new Live View enhancement can help not only to guide us, but even to find some points of interest inside these buildings, such as elevators, baggage claim areas, check-in counters, and even the nearest bathrooms. Or in the case of shopping malls or large leisure centers, we will be able to use it as an interactive map to find out on which floor a particular establishment is located.
Additionally, Google Maps will also begin to include other features such as new weather and air quality layers, which will allow us to see weather information for a specific area as well as air quality in the region; eco-route planning, with a recommendation of the most fuel-efficient route; and even alerts for low-emission zones in cities. This way, users will be able to know if their vehicle is allowed in the area.
