According to the latest information, in 2020, SSD (solid-state drive) shipments reached 333 million, surpassed 260 million HDD (hard disk drive) shipments, even though in terms of capacity, hard disk drives are still one step ahead.
SDD shipments outpaced HDDs in 2020
However, in terms of total capacity, HDDs are still the winners. 333 million SSDs have a total 207 EB capacity, while HDD shipments in total cover slightly more than 1 ZB. (Note: 1ZB=1024EB, 1EB=1024PB, 1PB=1024TB)
Regardless of the volume of shipments or the total capacity of shipments, Samsung is firmly in the first place, followed by Western Digital, SK Hynix, and other manufacturers.
From the total data, the average capacity of SSDs is 0.67TB, while the average capacity of HDDs is around 4TB. In terms of shipments, SSDs are growing at an annual rate of 20.8%, while HDDs are declining at a rate of 18%.
