Elon Musk gave some important advice at the WSJ CEO Summit
“Are American CEOs focused enough on improving their products? I think the answer is no,” said Elon Musk. According to the head of Tesla, CEOs should spend less time on things like finance, and they should spend time “just trying to make their product the best possible.”
Musk invites CEOs to step back and ask themselves, “Is our product as good as it gets? Probably not. What would you do to get better?”
“I honestly advise all listeners to spend less time in meetings, PowerPoint presentations, and spreadsheets, and spend more time on production and customers,” added the head of SpaceX.
The ultimate goal is to be “an absolute perfectionist about the product you make or the service you provide, seeking negative reviews from all sides: from customers and from those who are not your customers.”
Even if the CEO doesn’t specialize in innovation, the skill is “learnable.” “This is not some kind of mystery,” Musk added. If you only focus on the bottom line, “you are doing the wrong thing.” he said.
