Lenovo has announced the ThinkPad X1 Fold and we are going to talk about its specs, price, and release date. It is the industry’s first foldable laptop and a good sample of innovative and versatile device that can be used as an ultra-portable, as a large tablet or in the intermediate uses that its unique form factor allows.
- Galaxy Z Flip Lite will be Samsung’s most affordable foldable phone
- Apple tests the prototypes of the foldable iPhone
- Xiaomi patents a foldable smartphone with a slider display
Lenovo surprised the market in the spring of 2019 by introducing a prototype that opened up the next generation of foldable personal computers. If Samsung had opened the way in smartphones with the Galaxy Fold, the Chinese firm was doing it in laptops using the same type of design, a “book” type with foldable and unfoldable in half thanks to a special hinge and its flexible screen. Let’s see what Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold offers.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold specs
A screen that is undoubtedly the star of this ThinkPad X1 Fold. It is a multi-touch pOLED manufactured by LG specifically for this device, with 13.3 inches diagonal, QXGA resolution, and support for 95% of the DCI-P3 color range. It has undergone extensive durability testing to ensure that it meets the criteria for quality and usability, extensive foldable cycles, stress tests, and use of light pencils.
Lenovo ensures that Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold will have durability like the rest of the company’s high-end models. This will be aided by its unique multi-linked torsional hinge mechanism to support the folding action. Lenovo has tested six different hinge designs and more than twenty variations until the final one, framed in a chassis with a carbon fiber reinforced frame plate.
Another component of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold stands out, the Core i5-L16G7 processor that Intel has produced to release the new hybrid design under “Lakefield” architecture and that we have already seen in Microsoft’s Surface Neo or Samsung’s Galaxy Book S. It comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and a 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD for internal storage.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold’s connectivity is excellent, with the latest wireless standards Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, USB 3.2 Type-C ports, web camera with IR support for biometric authentication with Windows Hello, dTPM 2.0 security chip, support for 4G and 5G broadband, and connection possibilities for accessories such as expansion bases or physical keyboards for desktop work, in addition to the Lenovo Mod Pen. It can run 8.5 hours with typical use or 10.4 hours in video playback.
