Tiktok closes a new license agreement with Sony Music
As announced by the TikTok team, they have closed a license agreement with Sony so content creators and influencers will continue to have thousands of songs available to them for the posts they share on the platform.
Good news if you use the audio clips provided by TikTok for your own creations on the platform. You will have the hits of all times, new releases, trends, hits, artists of the moment, different music genres, etc.
And of course, this is also an extra boost for artists under the Sony Music wing. In fact, one of the highlights of the agreement between Sony and TikTok is the opportunity to promote the artists on the platform. TikTok has long been one of the favorite venues for artists and their audiences.
And if a song has gone viral, it has almost certainly started with TikTok. It is already a ritual for artists to create challenges every time they release a new song and invite their followers to the challenge. And they have the added bonus that TikTok offers with its additional features, for example, the ability for any user to create a duet with their favorite artist with a few clicks.
TikTok has not given further details about this agreement but has mentioned some initiatives that could soon be seen on the platform.
ByteDance, the company behind this popular social network, renewed its agreement with Sony Music Entertainment, to continue providing part of its song catalog for content creation.
Specifically, for the common users, this movement will not manifest itself with any change in the dynamics of the operation. However, this does define the next steps that TikTok will take.
As a contextualization, it is worth remembering that, as is also the case with other social networks, the music available on TikTok is there thanks to a series of contracts that the company behind the platform has with major music distribution and record companies. These agreements allow that, at least within the platform, this music can be used legally, as long as it is extracted from the catalog incorporated by the app.
Previously, ByteDance had already signed agreements with Sony and other major distribution companies, such as Warner, Universal and a number of independent agencies, but all in the short term. In this new case, the striking aspect of this agreement lies, eventually, in the application of its coverage.
Being consulted by the press, both parties declined to provide further details on this contract. However, there are claims indicating that TikTok presented “a significant increase” in its payment to Sony over the previous deal.
In the statement issued by TikTok to announce this news, it is emphasized that both companies seek to empower each other, collaborating in the promotion of Sony’s music and artists from the platform, generating “new and forward-looking opportunities for fan participation,” the note states.
Tiktok closes a new license agreement with Sony Music. Today, the range of songs available in TikTok is quite rich in options. If these same steps taken with Sony Music are replicated with more distribution platforms of the same size, this social network would provide access to an important part -if not all- of the Western commercial music catalog and could be consolidated, even more strongly, not only as an entertainment platform but also as an official dissemination platform for many artists, who could probably, in the future, make releases or other types of activities exclusively through that medium.
