YouTube will delete manipulated videos related to elections in the future. The pressure on online video service is growing ahead of the US presidential election.
The Google subsidiary YouTube wants to delete manipulated videos in connection with elections in the future. The goal is to be a “more reliable” news source and to promote a “healthy political discourse”, the online video service said in a blog post on Monday.
What kind of content will be affected?
Content that has been “technically manipulated or forged to mislead users” and that poses a “serious risk” of harm will be removed from YouTube.
According to the information, for example, false death reports about politicians will be deleted. Misleading videos about referendums and censuses, giving false information about voting dates will also be deleted in the future.
YouTube will terminate the channels that impersonates another person or channel, give wrong information about the country of origin or even hide association with government.
Also videos with artificially increased views, likes, comments or any other metric will be removed.
YouTube has learned from what happened in 2016
Ahead of the US presidential elections in November, there is growing concern about misinformation online that could manipulate voters. Online services such as Facebook and Twitter are under great pressure to take action against fake news and misinformation.
Critics accuse the internet giants of doing nothing against false news on their platforms during the 2016 US presidential election.
