Futurist artist who worked on the films Blade Runner, Aliens and more, passed away at the age of 86, of complications from lymphoma in Pasadena, California reported The Variety.
Mead began his career as a designer at Ford, and worked for Sony, US Steel, Philips, but changed industries in order to become an illustrator. It was him who created the image of Los Angeles of the future for Blade Runner and developed the concepts of cars used in the movie.
Over the years, he managed to work on many fantastic projects and worked until the end of his days. Mead was one of the concept artists for the films Elysium and Blade Runner 2049. He designed the Leonov spaceship from 2001: A Space Odyssey. A documentary called Visual Futurist: The Art & Life of Syd Mead was shot about his life.
He was set to receive William Cameron Menzies Award from Art Directors Guild at the 24th award ceremony in February, for his works on Aliens, Blade Runner and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
