Windows Terminal Preview 1.7 Release is an update loaded with new features and improvements that we should soon see in the stable version.
But, if you want to try everything now, you can easily download this version from the Microsoft Store or from GitHub, and it will work completely separate from the stable version.
What’s new in Windows Terminal Preview 1.7?
Among the new features of this version, we can highlight the support for JSON fragment extensions, which means that you can now download JSON fragments as extensions to modify user settings. You can create a folder that includes the JSON fragment file, as well as other elements, for example, background images to include in the extension.
Another new feature is that you no longer need to manually edit the configuration JSON file to switch between Windows Terminal color profiles. From the Settings, it is now possible to change preset color schemes from a small selection available, and you can edit them or create your own set directly.
In fact, the Settings UI opens by default when you click the Settings button next to the tabs. You can also open the settings using the shortcut “CTRL + ,”
Windows Terminal Preview 1.7 also brings improvements in window management, which allows you to open a new window with the command palette and/or your keyboard. This can even be done with a new keyboard shortcut: “CTRL + SHIFT + N”
It also supports read-only panes to avoid entering a pane, which could be useful if you have a running process that you don’t want to interrupt. In addition, a new setting has been added to automatically focus on a panel when you hover the mouse pointer over it.
