VW Polo: Generation 6 gets more radiance
VW spices up the Polo. From autumn, the sixth generation, introduced in 2017, will be available with a refined look, new lights, more assistance systems and revised equipment with a better equipped basic version. In terms of drives, the turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines and a natural gas variant remain. In addition, there will still be the GTI with over 200 hp two-liter petrol engine.
The changes to the front and rear lights, which now rely entirely on LED technology as standard, are particularly striking. The lighting design gives the vehicle a new signature. If the Polo is ordered with new LED matrix headlights, an LED light strip extends across the front, as is the case with the Golf 8 or ID.3.
Also new are the two-part rear lights, like on the Golf 8, which now also protrude into the tailgate and give the vehicle a wider stance. An upper LED light strip, which continues a character line running in the flanks, has been nicely solved. Depending on the equipment, the taillights are also available with wiper indicators and a click-clack effect for the brake light. If the driver steps on the brake pedal, the taillight segment goes out and a brake light segment below is activated.
There are also innovations in the interior of the Polo. The general standard equipment now includes a “digital cockpit” with an 8.0-inch screen diagonal, and there is also a 6.5-inch touchscreen in the center console for the infotainment complex with audio system and Bluetooth interface. The general standard equipment also includes an air conditioning system, electric exterior mirrors, 4-way window lifters and an instrument panel with foamed surface material. Other new features of the Polo are a center airbag housed in the driver’s seat back and the multifunction steering wheel. A lane departure warning system is new for the basic equipment, and the “IQ.Drive Travel Assist” has also been added as an option. This includes a distance cruise control that not only adjusts the speed to the front man, but also adapts to speed limits and, thanks to the integration of GPS data, to the course of the road.
The digital worlds of Polo can be upgraded further. The digital cockpit is alternatively available with a 10.25 inch screen diagonal. VW has also developed a digital user interface for the optional automatic air conditioning. For the Polo and Life equipment, the standard solution is called “Composition Media” with the aforementioned 6.5-inch touchscreen. With the higher-quality levels Style and R-Line, the Discover Media with 8-inch screen is included as standard. The Discover Pro is optionally available in 9.2-inch format. The two higher-quality infotainment solutions already offer navigation. Thanks to the integrated eSIM, connectivity services such as the free “We connect” or the “We connect plus”, which are chargeable after one or three years, are also available. New to the infotainment world of the Polo are access to streaming services and personalization of many settings that can be saved in the cloud.
At the start of autumn, VW will only offer single-liter, three-cylinder engines for the Polo. The lower output levels of 80 hp and 95 hp are combined with a five-speed gearbox as standard. The version with 95 PS can optionally be combined with a 7-speed DSG; the DSG is mandatory for the 110 PS petrol engine. The natural gas engine 1.0 TGI with 90 HP is also available. Later, VW also submitted the GTI, which increased slightly to 207 hp.
Speaking of sporty: The new top “R-Line” equipment features, among other things, striking black accents on the outer skin, the LED matrix headlights, 16-inch aluminum and seat covers in art velor. The equally high-quality “Style” equipment, on the other hand, focuses more on elegance outside and inside. “Life” is the name of the middle level, which, compared to the nameless base, offers, among other things, a higher quality fabric for the seat covers, leather on the steering wheel and gear knob, a center armrest and an additional USB-C port.
