    Rover selfie with Mars helicopter

Greetings from the Red Planet: This double portrait shows the NASA rover Perseverance with its little companion, the Mars helicopter Ingenuity. The Mars rover took this selfie a few days ago using the camera on its long robotic arm. The Mars helicopter is about to take its first test flight – it will probably start on April 12, 2021.

The Mars rover Perseverance is the newest member of the rolling exploration robots on the Red Planet. Only a few weeks ago – in mid-February 2021 – the vehicle touched down in the Jezero crater, but the rover already has some achievements to show for it. We owe the first video images of a Mars landing from the point of view of a space probe to his camera, and his microphone recorded the sounds of a journey over the Martian underground for the first time.

Another pioneering act is now imminent: the first flight of a man-made device on the Red Planet. The first flight tests of the Mars helicopter Ingenuity will start on April 12th. In preparation, the Mars rover has already selected a suitable, as level as possible “airfield” and placed the small drone from its “nest” under the rover’s belly on the ground.

This selfie from April 6, 2021 shows Perseverance in the foreground and diagonally behind the small Mars helicopter – ready for its test flights. The Mars rover took this picture with the help of its long robotic arm, at the end of which is the “WATSON” wide-angle camera. The entire panorama – we are only showing a section here – is composed of 62 individual images.
