He’s grown up – that’s the new Skoda Fabia

It is the fourth generation of the compact Skoda that the Czechs are now presenting and that will be launched on our market in autumn. So what makes the new Fabia so special?

    Dimensions

The Fabia has become significantly larger. At 4.11 meters, it surpasses its predecessor by 11 centimeters and exceeds the 4-meter mark for the first time. At the same time, the width increases by 48 mm and the wheelbase by 94 mm. This means that the new Fabia even has a wheelbase that is five centimeters longer than the first Octavia.

Passengers benefit from this as much as luggage. The trunk holds 50 liters more – so there are between 380 and 1,190 liters of cargo space available.

    Design

Externally, there are no big surprises and the Fabia takes up the design language given by Octavia and Enyaq. The sharply drawn headlights work with LED technology (full LED is optional). The rear lights (also with LED) are now divided into two parts. “With the fourth generation of the FABIA, we are taking the next step in terms of ŠKODA’s typically emotional design language. Thanks to the new proportions, our entry-level model looks much more dynamic and adult, “says Head of Design Oliver Stefani.

    aerodynamics

The Skoda developers are particularly proud of the improved aerodynamics. The result is a drag coefficient of 0.28 and this is made possible, among other things, by a new type of radiator shutter in the lower air intake of the front bumper. Actively adjustable louvres close when there is little need for cooling, thereby improving aerodynamics. At a constant speed of 120 km / h, this leads to fuel savings of up to 0.2 l / 100 km, according to Skoda.

A larger roof spoiler and side finlets should help to optimize the wind flow in the rear area. And since the wheels alone generate around 25 percent of the air resistance, Skoda uses special plastic inserts in the Fabia to optimize the light-alloy wheels aerodynamically.

    Interior

Not only is there more space in the interior, the cockpit also has a higher quality appearance thanks to the materials used. A striking detail are certainly the relatively lavishly shaped door handles on the inside. The infotainment display is free-standing and, depending on the equipment, up to 9.2 inches in size. For the first time, a virtual cockpit is optionally available in the Fabia. It has a 10.25-inch digital display. The driver can configure the displays individually and choose between different basic layouts. The Fabia is equipped with an analog cockpit as standard.

Depending on the equipment, the Fabia is also available with ambient lighting. The Active, Ambition and Style equipment lines are available for the market launch. The sporty Monte Carlo variant follows later.

    engines

Skoda no longer offers the Fabia with diesel. There are petrol engines with 65, 80, 95, 110 and 150 hp to choose from. Except for the 150 hp engine, everything is three-cylinder with a displacement of 1 liter. The 150 hp four-cylinder comes with a 7-speed DSG as standard, the 110-hp petrol engine is optionally available with a 6-speed switch or a 7-speed DSG, all others are combined with a 5-speed manual transmission.

    Extras

Optionally, the Fabia can be upgraded with additional goodies. These include 2-zone climatronic, steering wheel heating, a heated windscreen or a panoramic glass roof. A cover for this is supplied separately, it can be folded up and stowed under the luggage compartment cover. Also on offer is a telephone box for inductive charging of the smartphone. There are also more helpful assistance systems on offer. For example the Travel Assistant – this system activates and combines several assistants at the same time with just one push of a button: the automatic distance control (ACC) automatically adjusts the speed to vehicles in front up to a speed of 210 km / h and the integrated Lane Keeping Assist helps if necessary with corrective steering intervention. The system uses hand recognition to check whether the driver is consistently touching the steering wheel.

    Launch

The market launch for the new Fabia is in mid-October, the prices are not yet known, the advance sales are expected to start in the summer.
