First trip with the new Audi Q4 e-tron

So this is the new entry-level model into the e-tron world from Audi: 16,400 euros cheaper than the original e-tron and more compact in terms of dimensions. At 4.58 meters in length, it is exactly as long as the ID.4 from VW, with which it also shares the technical base.

But the Audi people never tire of explaining that the Q4 has the same interior length as the much larger Q7. In any case, you have a lot of space in Q4 and that’s the first positive surprise. Even in the back seats you can enjoy ample leg and headroom. Sure, the battery is integrated in the underbody of the car, there is no transmission tunnel and the electric motor doesn’t take up much space (or the two electric motors if you take the 50 e-tron quattro, but more on that later).

The trunk also offers sufficient space: the SUV is 520 to 1490 liters. The accommodation for the charging cables, which disappear in a shelf under the trunk floor, is also neatly solved.

    variants

Audi offers the Q4 e-tron in two body variants, as an SUV and a Sportback. And in three drive variants: as a 35 e-tron, as a 40 e-tron and 50 e-tron quattro. The small e-tron has the smallest battery with a capacity of 52 kWh. The 40 and 50 use the larger battery with 77 kWh. 35 and 40 have an electric motor that drives the rear wheels. it develops 125 kW (170 hp) in the 35 and 150 kW (204 hp) in the 40. The Q4 50 e-tron comes with two electric motors, one of which drives the front wheels and the other drives the rear wheels and has an output of 220 kW (299 PS).

So much for the theory. We take the Q4 50 e-tron for our first exit. It can accelerate violently with its two electric motors (as is known from electric cars) and reaches 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds. Theoretically, a top speed of 180 km / h would be possible, but in the E-Audi you tend to enjoy relaxed, electric gliding.

    steering wheel

The Audi developers are proud of the new steering wheel. On request, the top and bottom are flattened. That looks very noble and is also pleasant to the touch. The seamless touch surfaces in the valance for operating various functions are new. The operation takes a bit of getting used to at first, especially since the entire surface moves, but it works without any problems. There are rockers behind the valance to fine-tune the recuperation (i.e. the delay when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal). The delay that can be achieved in this way is however limited. Otherwise, you can preselect a stronger recuperation using a B mode on the automatic selector lever (although the car is not braked to a standstill). Automatic recuperation is even smarter when the car detects that you are approaching a town entrance, for example.

The coordination of the steering was successful, the Audi can be controlled very precisely, but it doesn’t get nervous.

As always, the crucial question with all electric ones is the range. And here the Q4, especially if you have installed the 77 kWh battery, reaches values where you actually no longer think about the next charging option. With the Q4 50 e-tron it is around 450 kilometers, with the Q4 40 Sportback up to approx. 530 kilometers.

If the power supply is running low, the Q4 40 e-tron and 50 e-tron can quickly charge up to 125 kW with direct current (with the 35 it is up to 100 kW). With this, the Q4 40 ideally charges electricity for a further 130 kilometers in 10 minutes.

In the Q4 40 e-tron, despite the lower performance, nothing is missing. The car also has a good 85 kilos less weight to haul. What you might miss on snowy roads would be the possibility of all-wheel drive.

The possibility of augmented reality display of content via a head-up display is helpful for navigation. For example, a large blue arrow marks the side street into which you have to turn or the exit in the roundabout that you have to take. But if you don’t like that, you can switch it off.

The Audi developers are extremely proud of the light designs that can be selected for the daytime running lights. There are four possible light signatures to choose from in the MMI operating system. LED headlights are standard, Matrix LED headlights are available on request.

    Prices

What does the Audi Q4 e-tron cost?

The Q4 35 e-tron starts at 43,500 euros, the 40 e-tron at 49,500 euros and the 50 e-tron quattro at 56,000 euros. Market launch is in the second week of June. The Sportback variants come in September, the prices are not yet known here.
