In April, Google has kept its word and delivered the Android 13 developer preview. Android 13 beta 1 is now available for Pixel phones from the 4 to the 6 and 6 Pro. The first beta only included three new features, but more detailed permission settings for shared media files are now available.

This is the first beta release of Google’s Android 13 operating system. It incorporates all of the upgrades from Android 13 Developer Preview 2, including requiring applications to request permission to send notifications. You’ll also notice a new photo chooser, Bluetooth LE audio, and USB MIDI support.

Anyone with a Google Account may download the beta. As before, though, you shouldn’t install this version on your main phone. While betas are generally more stable, Google does not anticipate prioritizing platform stability until June and doesn’t expect to release the finished Android 13 until sometime after July. This is for developers who want apps ready when the operating system becomes available to the public.
While Google isn’t required to share them, the many Android betas that have already leaked do not include all user-facing features. I/O 2021 was when Google revealed Material You, months after the initial previews appeared. While the beta is still useful, waiting for I/O 2022 in May may be worthwhile if you’re interested in major changes.
