What is Reddit R Place?
r/Place is a collaborative project and social experiment launched on Reddit for April Fools’ Day in 2017. The idea is based on an online canvas on the r/Place subreddit, where users may change one pixel’s color using a 16-color palette.
After 72 hours in 2017, the experiment was terminated, with more than one million individuals editing the canvas and putting a total of about 16 million tiles.

How does Reddit r/Place work?
In 2022, when Reddit has millions more users and far more advanced technical features, the same r/Place idea applies on a larger scale.
As Reddit themselves explain with a jaunty little poem: ‘Some have visited a canvas before. / A place where togetherness created more. / Now in numbers far greater, taking more space, / It falls upon you to create a better place.’
Instead of merely changing the color of a pixel, users may now include anything they want, such as memes, photographs, icons, logos.
The AMC stock brand, a wink to how Redditors rallied against Wall Streeters who ‘shorted’ stock in 2021, and the GameStop logo are among the images included.
They’re proposing the idea of something global, something that is a part of all of us and brings different people together.
