One month later, what was supposed to be one of the biggest titles of the year has lost 76% of its players, Cyberpunk 2077 began very well, at least as far as sales are concerned. For example, on its launch date, it broke the record by having the highest number of players connected for a single-player focused title.
- FIFA 21: Top 5 formations and tactics for winning matches in FUT
- Best of Steam 2020: The year’s top 100 games as measured by gross revenue
- Steam reaches a new record of 24.8 million simultaneous users
The loss of players is surprising, especially being the PC version. Unlike the title ported to the PS4 and Xbox One, Cyberpunk 2077 on PC did not seem to be fundamentally unplayable but rather had the same problems expected from a game in its early weeks (including a rather annoying bug that could corrupt your save file).
Cyberpunk 2077 has lost 76% of its players on Steam
Not that anyone is playing ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ at the moment either. Today the CD Projekt game has a maximum peak of 200,000 players on Steam. A big number, but far from replicating the more than 1 million people connected playing it a month ago.
It is normal that games lose a significant portion of their players, especially those like ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ that are not focused on online multiplayer content. However, the time it has taken this fall is a sign that something else is going on. For a comparison ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’, another Projekt CD title, took three months to lose this number of players and, in addition, it started with a much smaller peak of only 92,000 players in 2015.
There are several reasons why this could have happened. The first is the bugs we have mentioned and the glitches that have been reported. Some players have simply preferred to wait until they find a much more stable and complete version of the game.
The second reason may be that the ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ campaign is not as extensive as some may expect from a game of this scale. The game has a lot of additional content, once you finish its story. But the campaign as such takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete, so the drop in players may be due simply to people who have already completed their cycle with it and are now waiting for the arrival of the first free DLC.
