Apple is developing Mac Pro 2022
Apple has been pursuing to eliminate Intel chips since 2020 when it began replacing the entire Mac range with Apple silicon chips. It is anticipated that 2022 will be the year when the transition is completed. The Mac Pro is still one of the most high-end desktop computers available, but it is set to abandon Intel chips in 2022.
Mac Pro 2022: Design
Apple is reportedly working on two upgrades for the Mac Pro. The first machine is a direct successor to the 2019 Mac Pro with its contemporary lattice design and modular casing, while the second is a new member of the family that’s smaller in stature.
The larger Mac Pro 2022 is anticipated to remain on the stainless steel frame and aluminum shell with a twin-sided logic board and easy access to the interior for adding and removing components. It has yet to be determined whether the thermal design will change, and it will still utilize the same three-dimensional interconnected hemispheres for heat dissipation.
The smaller sibling to Mac Pro 2022 is expected to be resembling the existing Mac Pro but with a more compact casing that is half the size. According to leakers, Apple’s smaller Mac Pro will be about the size of three to four Mac minis stacked on top of one another, with a compute unit on the bottom and a large heat sink on top.
Mac Pro 2022: Intel or Apple chips?
The next-generation Mac Pro will reportedly be powered by Intel processors, while the smaller version will include Apple chips.
For the Mac Pro 2022, Apple is working on some extremely high-performance Apple silicon chips, but the initial versions may not be able to compete with Xeon processors for heavy-duty workloads, and there may be concerns about software compatibility. Perhaps the Mac Pro with the Intel chips and the Mac Pro with the Apple chips will be released at the same time to meet all of a professional’s requirements.
The half-sized Mac Pro is expected to feature the equivalent of two or four M1 Max processors, which will make it far more powerful than the current MacBook Pro models with the M1 Max chips. Apple’s first silicon chip is expected to include 20 CPU cores and 64 GPU cores, while the second more powerful chip will have 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores.
Apple will reportedly use a version of the M1 Max chip with at least two dies to allow for more cores than are available in the MacBook Pro‘s current M1 Max, and future versions could have up to four dies.
Apple may employ the Intel Lake SP chips, which are Intel’s third-generation Xeon Scalable processors. Signs of these chips were spotted in an Xcode 13 beta prior to macOS Monterey’s release.
Mac Pro 2022: Release date
The Mac Pro is anticipated later this year, and it probably will be unveiled as early as June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Apple might show the machine at the event and then release it later in the fall, giving app makers time to create optimized software for Apple’s more powerful silicon chips.
