Sony confirms they are working to bring some PlayStation franchises to smartphones.

In a sea of emulators and nostalgia it was logical to adapt classic and important titles to phones such as Metal Slug, Pang Adventures or console games like Grand Theft Auto or Star Wars: KOTOR. This list is long and the quality is getting better and better.

Then companies SEGA and Nintendo brought their games to mobile platforms, followed by services such as GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Xbox Game Pass… Now, Sony is finally thinking of landing PlayStation franchises on mobile platforms!

There is no official information and only hints, but we have all been waiting for Sony and its foray with PlayStation on smartphones for a long time.

Perhaps this is because the games and exclusive sagas of the consoles works very well for Nintendo. Nintendo ended up officially bringing Super Mario to iOS and Android, something Sony is still resisting but is already eyeing smartphones, as its executives point out:

“Mobile devices are just one of the areas we are exploring to reach millions of players beyond our platforms. PlayStation has a huge catalog of titles that can make the transition to smartphone gaming and complement our AAA titles and online games. We are exploring the mobile market with some wonderful PlayStation franchises, so stay tuned” said Jim Ryan, president, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

It’s not entirely true that Sony has never been on smartphones, as Uncharted Fortune Hunter debuted on Google Play 5 years ago, with no other PlayStation game or franchise making an appearance on either iOS or Android since then.

In addition, Sony also explores and prepares some movies and TV series based on PlayStation franchises, so it seems to be confirmed that they have indeed started the process to diversify and attract more revenue.
