PlayStation Store closing for PS3, PS Vita, and PSP this summer, Sony has confirmed. After rumors swirled about it, the company has stated that the digital store will close its doors on these platforms. Here are the details.

PlayStation Store closing for PS3, PS Vita, and PSP this summer

It is definitive. PlayStation Store will close on the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP platforms this summer. This is what Sony has indicated after rumors began to accumulate this March. Worldwide gamers still using these platforms will be able to re-download games they have purchased from this digital store, and play titles they have previously purchased. Sony said it will close the PlayStation Store digital store for PS3 and PSP on July 2, followed by the Vita store on August 27.

PlayStation Store will no longer be available on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita this summer. Sony has confirmed this closure in a post made on its official blog, where it has warned of the changes that the cessation of the PlayStation Store will bring. After the closure of the digital stores on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita, users will be able to re-download and play the titles they have previously purchased; and they will be able to enjoy PS Plus games as long as they remain subscribers.

In this way, Sony has indicated that players will lose access to the following features:

  • You will no longer be able to purchase PS3, PS Vita, and PSP digital content, including games and video content.
  • You will no longer be able to make in-game purchases on PS3, PS Vita, and PSP.
  • You will no longer be able to redeem vouchers or your PSN wallet funds (e.g., gift cards) on PS3, PS Vita, or PSP devices once PlayStation Store and purchase functionality for these devices are closed. Your PSN wallet funds will remain in your PSN account, but you will only be able to use your wallet funds to purchase PS4 and PS5 products from PlayStation Store on the web, PlayStation App, or on PS4 and PS5 consoles.

This confirmation comes just days after Sony removed the old web version of the PS Store, which gamers used to continue purchasing PS3, Vita, and PSP games. On the other hand, the company has also indicated that PlayStation Store will stop offering TV and movie content for purchase or rental as of August 31, 2021. Sony Interactive Entertainment video business director Vanessa Lee said in early March that the decision has been made due to the growth of streaming services on PS4 and PS5.
