WhatsApp is reportedly developing a “night mode” feature for its Android application, aimed at enhancing photography in dimly lit environments. This new functionality was discovered in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.25.22.2, according to WABetaInfo, a prominent WhatsApp feature tracker.
The night mode introduces a moon icon positioned next to the flash icon in the camera interface. Users will need to manually tap this icon to activate the feature, as it does not automatically engage based on ambient light conditions. This manual activation suggests a user-controlled approach to low-light photography.
The core of the night mode’s improvement lies in its software-based adjustments. It is designed to optimize an image’s exposure and reduce noise, particularly when photos are taken in low-light settings. WABetaInfo notes that this allows the camera to capture more detail in shadowed areas without the need for external light sources. This could be particularly beneficial for indoor photography or during nighttime scenarios where natural light is insufficient.
Despite these enhancements, the night mode is expected to offer only “modest” improvements in extremely dark conditions. It is not intended to produce exceptionally bright or detailed images in such scenarios, nor is it positioned as a substitute for professional photography equipment or techniques. The feature is currently accessible to a select group of beta testers enrolled through the Google Play Beta program, with a wider rollout anticipated in future app updates.
