Spotify code hints at imminent launch of lossless audio feature

Spotify code hints at imminent launch of lossless audio feature

On June 18, new code references to “lossless” audio were discovered in Spotify’s desktop and mobile applications, signaling the long-delayed high-fidelity tier may be nearing release. Technologist Chris Messina first reported strings in the desktop app referring to help cards that describe the feature as “Lossless music, now in premium,” offering “up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz” quality. The code also advises that the feature is best used with wired or Spotify Connect-compatible devices.

Separately, a Reddit user found similar code in the mobile app, which was later verified by TechCrunch. This development follows years of waiting after Spotify first announced its “HiFi” tier in 2021 but never launched it, citing licensing issues as the primary hurdle.

The renewed possibility of a launch is supported by several recent events. In early 2025, Spotify signed new deals with major labels like Warner Music and Universal Music Group, potentially clearing the previous licensing obstacles. Additionally, a Bloomberg report earlier this year pointed to a forthcoming premium “Music Pro” tier that would include high-quality streaming. While Spotify executives have consistently avoided giving a specific timeline for a lossless feature, they have confirmed the company is actively investing in new premium tiers for its “superfans.”
