Motion capture has long served as the foundation for how the motion and animation of characters in film and gaming have come to life. Unfortunately, this process is expensive and time-consuming, requiring specialized equipment and complex sets.

Hence the introduction of Runway Act-One, an AI tool ready to change the industry. While AI may not entirely replace motion capture, innovations like Act-One suggest that artificial intelligence and motion capture technologies will increasingly converge, streamlining the animation process.

How Runway Act-One simplifies traditional motion capture

Motion capture (or “mocap”) is the technique of recording human actors’ movements and using that data to animate digital characters in films, video games, and other visual media. It takes actors’ physical performances to the nitty gritty details, such as facial expressions and hand gestures, and puts them into 3D models. While highly effective, traditional motion capture requires expensive suits, multiple cameras, and elaborate software to generate accurate results. These complexities can make it difficult for smaller studios or independent creators to use.

Driving Performance and generated character animations

Runway Act-One, a new tool following the company’s introduction of the Gen-3 Alpha Turbo, offers an alternative approach to performance capture that requires little more than basic video input. Instead of needing a full-motion capture studio, creators can now use simple video footage of an actor’s performance, which Act-One converts into high-quality animations.

  • Simple video input: All needed is a basic video of the actor. The AI can extract the performance details and convert them into animated characters.
  • Detailed performance capture: The tool is designed to preserve nuances like eye movements, micro-expressions, and even the tempo of the performance, ensuring that the final animation feels lifelike.
  • Overcoming traditional barriers: Where traditional methods demand multi-step workflows and extensive equipment, Act-One works directly with video performance, eliminating many barriers.

This is a short video made entirely using Runway tools. It is a realistic video of two people having dinner in a restaurant in the evening using Act-One.

Runway Act-One simplifies the workflow and reduces the need for specialized equipment, Allowing more creators to access high-quality animation tools. For instance, animators can apply performances across different characters and maintain cinematic-quality results.

While Act-One isn’t fully replacing traditional motion capture, it signals a shift in how AI could be used alongside motion capture technologies. One standout feature of Runway Act-One is its ability to create multi-character scenes using just one actor. This drastically reduces the need for multiple performers and opens new creative possibilities.

For example:

  • Multiple dialogue scenes: AI can generate realistic, multi-character scenes that would have been difficult or costly with traditional methods.
  • Single actor, multiple characters: With a simple consumer-grade camera, a single actor can bring multiple characters to life in a scene. This offers content creators more flexibility and lowers production costs.

What does this mean for the future?

The potential for AI tools like Act-One to reshape motion capture is significant. AI will likely become more integral to performance capture as these technologies evolve, blending with traditional techniques to create a more efficient, accessible process for animators and filmmakers. However, traditional mocap still has advantages in larger, more complex projects requiring precise, physical performances that AI might not fully replicate.

Runway Act-One gives us a glimpse into how artificial intelligence might transform motion capture, allowing for easier, more accessible performance capture. Whether through creating lifelike characters or simplifying the animation process, the convergence of AI and motion capture is undeniably on the horizon.

Runway AI’s new pricing

Runway AI has updated its pricing plans for 2024. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Standard Plan ($15/month): Basic AI features, 100GB storage, and 720p/4K exports.
