Social media giant Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and Threads apps experienced a worldwide outage. YouTube also had a similar loading problem.

While the outages affected millions of users, the hashtag #hacked became trending on X. Here are all the details…

Why are Meta’s social media platforms down?

According to a statement from Meta, the outage was caused by a “technical issue“. The company announced that they are working to solve the problem and that it will be fixed as soon as possible. On the other hand, YouTube reported that the problem was fixed, and the situation was being monitored.

Facebook and Instagram were most affected by the outage. According to Downdetector, there were more than half a million reports of outages on Facebook and more than 80,000 on Instagram. Facebook and Messenger experienced login screen issues, while Instagram and Threads experienced app issues. The outage started simultaneously on all 4 platforms and affected millions of users.

Meta’s platforms experienced a similar outage in 2021. At the time, the company apologized for the problem due to a “faulty configuration change“.
The exact cause of the outage and whether users will receive compensation is unclear.

What can users affected by the outage do?

  • Users can try updating apps
  • They can try to restart their device
  • Can check internet connections
  • If the problem persists, they can get help from Meta and YouTube’s help centers

It remains to be seen how the outage will affect Meta’s plans for the metaverse. The company is investing heavily in the metaverse, and it is crucial that these platforms work without interruption.
