Google is developing 400 games for Stadia platform. It’s been a year since the launch of Stadia, Google’s cloud game service. The first year was a little bit complicated, just because the platform itself published a blog post explaining exactly what the service consists of.

  • Google will give Stadia Premium pack with Cyberpunk 2077
  • Microsoft will bring xCloud and Game Pass to iOS
  • Amazon Luna opens its streaming service in early access

Google has been working this year to find ways to advertise the service and, for example, they are mentioning Stadia being a good option to play games on a Chromebook. Plus, Google gives away three months of subscription for the purchase of a Chromebook. But their main problem is the lack of interest in the games available in the subscription model.

Obviously, Stadia’s managers are very aware of this problem and, fortunately, seems like they have decided to solve it. In an interview with Jack Buse when asked about Stadia’s roadmap for the next two years and beyond, Buser answers “What I can tell you is that we’ve built a roadmap of about 400 games in development right now from 200 developers.”. It does not, of course, indicate concrete plans, titles they are working on, and, very importantly, how many of those 400 titles will arrive in 2021 and 2022.

This is a particularly interesting statement. The first thing, without a doubt, is that it seems like Stadia has a bet on quantity. This is neither good nor bad, it’s just an option, but what I’m thinking about is that it’s hard to think about particularly complex developments. In other words, we can’t expect, at least in principle, that among the 400 games there will be one that is comparable to a triple-A in the market.

Google Stadia is developing 400 games for the platform. Google seems to have bet more on its exclusive titles for Stadia. Again, this is something that can be good or bad, since we are talking about a catalog that would not be based so much on games that have already been commercial successes but on their own titles. The challenge for Stadia will be to make the catalog attractive enough for potential customers to decide to subscribe to the service.
