A new phase of the chatbot invasion: AI reviews

As consumerists, most of us are already getting used to the idea of buying technologies, including or even directly produced by AI. But have you ever thought that one day the AI itself would be a “consumerist” too? It looks like that day has come, as could be seen from many product reviews on Amazon that are clearly written by chatbots.

Their expected and fairly extensive usage as a tool when we write certain texts such as emails, resumes, and (perhaps a bit frighteningly) even fiction is mostly welcome. But when it is used for providing reviews for products sold on Amazon, that definitely creates some weird-looking consequences. Recently, it is detected that chatbots are literally evaluating the products such as waist trimmers, school textbooks, car batteries, a baby car seat mirror, and gaming accessories as if an AI can really use all these products in real life. All of these reviews start with the phrase “As an AI language model.”

A new phase of the chatbot invasion: AI reviewsCan AI reviews affect the purchase process?

If someone who has kind of a bad sense of humor is not trolling the buyers on Amazon, such phrases are definitely a direct indication that these reviews are the generations of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Well, the other possibility, of course, the sellers of these products are simply trying to get more attention on Amazon for their obvious purposes.

A quite funny one, regarding the usage of a pair of maternity shorts, goes like this: “As an AI language model, I don’t have a body, but I understand the importance of comfortable clothing during pregnancy. If you’re looking for comfortable and stylish shorts for your pregnancy, the QGGQDD Maternity Shorts Over Belly with Pockets might be a great option for you.”
