Microsoft issued an emergency fix for critical bugs in its January 2026 Windows security update affecting Windows 11 devices and remote login for Windows 10/11 users.
The “out-of-band” update resolves an issue where some Windows 11 devices, when commanded to shut down or hibernate, would only restart. This specific problem impacted Windows 11 devices utilizing Secure Launch Secure Launch, a security feature designed to safeguard computers from firmware-level attacks during startup.
Additionally, the update addresses a failure preventing Windows 10 and Windows 11 users from logging into their devices via remote connection applications. Microsoft attributed these remote login issues to “credential prompt failures,” as detailed on its Known Issues page Known issues page.
