This guide will teach you how to update firmware on an LG Smart TV automatically and manually. If your TV is connected to the internet, you can update automatically through the Settings menu; otherwise, download the firmware on a computer and install it via USB drive. Quick steps include pressing the Settings button, navigating to Software Update, and selecting Download and Install or Check for Updates.

Before you start: Ensure your TV is connected to the internet for automatic updates. For manual updates, have a computer, a FAT32-formatted USB drive, and your TV’s exact model number ready.

How to update LG TV firmware automatically or manually

Choose the method that matches your TV’s WebOS version, internet status, or if you prefer USB installation.

Method 1: Updating WebOS 5-22

  • Press the Settings button on your remote (the TV must be on).
  • Select Support, the last option in the menu.
  • Select Software Update, the first option that opens the update window.
  • Select Download and Install at the bottom. If unavailable, choose Check for Updates.

Method 2: Updating WebOS 4 and older

  • Press the Settings button on your remote.
  • Select All Settings, shown as a gear or three-dot icon at the bottom.
  • Choose General, the wrench-icon option on the left.
  • Select About This TV in the right-hand menu.
  • Pick Download and Install (or Check for Updates) under Allow Automatic Updates.

Method 3: Updating via computer and USB

  • Visit your TV’s LG support page and enter your model number to find the firmware.
  • Download the software update ZIP file.
  • Unzip the file by double-clicking or right-clicking and selecting Extract All.
  • Create a new folder named LG_DTV inside the extracted folder.
  • Move the .bin file into the LG_DTV folder.
  • Plug a USB drive into your computer.
  • Copy the LG_DTV folder to the USB drive.
  • Disconnect the USB drive and insert it into the TV’s USB IN port.
  • On the TV, select Start; the TV will detect and install the update, then restart automatically.

Method 4: LG update schedule

LG’s Re:New program provides up to five years of WebOS updates for eligible models. Check the LG support site for the latest schedule and your model’s eligibility.

Pro tip: After updating, go to Settings > Support > Software Update to verify your firmware version and enable automatic updates for future convenience.

Updating your LG TV firmware enhances performance, fixes bugs, and adds new features to WebOS. It improves security against vulnerabilities and ensures compatibility with the latest apps and streaming services.

Regular updates via the Re:New program extend your TV’s lifespan, especially for older models. Staying current prevents issues like app crashes or slow interfaces, keeping your entertainment experience smooth.
