Google has launched automatic room check-in for Google Meet on mobile devices, announced on January 13, 2026. The feature uses proximity detection through an ultrasound signal emitted by conference room hardware. Android and iOS phones or tablets detect this signal via their microphone when users enter the room.
In the Google Meet green room, the “Use Companion mode” button highlights upon signal detection. Tapping it joins the call and automatically checks the user into the correct room. This process prevents disruptive audio feedback by directing users to the optimal joining method before the meeting begins, ensuring an echo-free start.
The system simplifies joining meetings in conference rooms for Companion mode users. It eliminates manual steps and streamlines the experience by confirming room presence through the ultrasonic signal.
Minimum app versions required include:
- Android: Meet 336.0 (check via Android Settings > Apps > Meet > App Info > Version) and Gmail 2025.12.01 (Android Settings > Apps > Gmail > App Info > Version).
- iOS: Meet 336.0 (Meet > Settings > About, terms, and privacy > Version) and Gmail 6.0.251201 (Settings > About Gmail > Version).
Google Workspace administrators can manage proximity detection, which is enabled by default. They toggle it on or off at the room level through the Google Workspace Admin Help Center.
End users see the Companion mode entry point highlighted in the green room when the proximity signal is present. After joining via the highlighted button, automatic check-in occurs. If proximity detection fails, users access troubleshooting in the Google Help Center or check in manually post-join.
Rollout occurs gradually:

- Scheduled Release domains: up to 15 days for feature visibility starting February 2, 2025.
The feature reaches all Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers.
