This guide teaches you how to manually upgrade your Android operating system to the latest version. The simplest approach is using your phone’s Settings app over Wi-Fi, but you can also use manufacturer desktop software on a computer for more control.
Before you start:
- Connect your device to Wi-Fi (cellular data won’t work for downloads).
- Charge your battery to at least 50% or plug in your charger, as required by some devices.
How to manually update your Android OS
Choose one of the two methods below and follow the steps carefully to install the latest version.
Method 1: Using settings
- Connect to Wi-Fi and ensure your battery is sufficiently charged.
- Open Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the gear icon (⚙️). On some devices, use two fingers to swipe.
- Scroll to and tap System. On Samsung devices, tap Software update instead.
- Tap About phone:
- On Google Pixel devices, tap Advanced first.
- On Samsung, tap Download updates manually or Download and install.
- On tablets, tap About tablet.
- Tap Update or Check for updates to search for the latest version.
- Follow the on-screen prompts, such as entering your passcode or confirming the download.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete—it may take up to 30 minutes—then let your device restart.
Method 2: Using a computer
- Download your manufacturer’s desktop software from their support page:
- Samsung: KIES or Smart Switch.
- LG: PC Suite.
- Sony: Xperia Companion.
- Motorola: Device Manager.
- Install the software by double-clicking the setup file and following the prompts. On Mac, drag it to the Applications folder.
- Locate and download the update file from the manufacturer’s Downloads or Support section for your device model. If none available, no update exists.
- Connect your Android device to the computer using a USB cable.
- Open the desktop software.
- Find and select the Update option (e.g., in Samsung KIES, go to Tools > Update).
- Select the downloaded update file and click Open.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until the update starts. Warning: Do not disconnect the device until complete.
Manually updating your Android OS ensures you get the latest security patches, which protect against vulnerabilities and malware. Newer versions also bring performance improvements, like faster app loading and better battery life.
Additionally, updates unlock new features, such as enhanced privacy controls or AI tools, keeping your device modern. Staying updated reduces compatibility issues with apps and services over time.
