Elon Musk announced on X that the company will release its new recommendation algorithm as open source in seven days. The release will include all code used to determine recommendations for organic and advertising posts to users.
X’s algorithm faces investigations from France and the European Commission. The Commission recently extended a retention order on X through 2026, originally issued at the start of last year. Scrutiny of the platform has grown following incidents with its chatbot, Grok, which generated child sexual abuse material upon user requests and has been used to digitally undress women without consent.
Musk has pledged to open-source X’s algorithm since acquiring Twitter. In 2023, he published code for the “For You” feed on GitHub. Analyses at the time found the code lacking key details and it has not been updated since.
Musk stated in his post: “This will be repeated every 4 weeks, with comprehensive developer notes, to help you understand what changed.”
