Some Windows 10 users may notice that they cannot change their screen resolution after certain updates. This issue is typically caused by outdated display drivers. In this guide, we’ll show you how to fix the screen resolution not changing issue on Windows 10 using simple troubleshooting methods.

How to fix screen resolution issues on Windows 10

Follow these step-by-step methods to update or reinstall your display drivers and resolve the problem.

Method 1: Check for updates

  • Click the Windows button on your keyboard or taskbar.
  • Open the Settings app from the menu.
  • Select Update & Security in the Settings window.
  • Click Check for updates.
  • Wait for the update check to complete.
  • Install any available updates if prompted.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Check if the screen resolution issue persists.

Method 2: Uninstall and reinstall display adapters

  • Press the Windows + X keys together.
  • Select Device Manager from the menu.
  • Expand the Display adapters section.
  • Locate your display driver in the list.
  • Right-click the driver and choose Uninstall device.
  • Confirm the uninstallation when prompted.
  • Restart your computer.
  • The driver should reinstall automatically upon restart.
  • Check if the screen resolution problem remains.

Method 3: Install driver in compatibility mode

  • Identify the brand and model of your display driver.
  • Download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s official website, such as NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  • Right-click the downloaded installer file.
  • Select Properties.
  • Open the Compatibility tab.
  • Check the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  • Select Windows 8 from the dropdown menu.
  • Complete the installation process.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Verify whether the resolution issue is resolved.
Pro tip: Before making any driver changes, create a system restore point by searching for “Create a restore point” in the Start menu to easily revert if something goes wrong.

If none of the methods above resolve the screen resolution issue, consider checking for hardware problems like a faulty graphics card or monitor cable. You can run the built-in Windows troubleshooter by going to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters and selecting Hardware and Devices. Additionally, test with an external monitor if available to isolate whether the problem is with your display or the system.

For further assistance, reach out to your display driver’s manufacturer for warranty support, custom driver updates, or technical help. They often provide specialized tools or forums tailored to your hardware model. Keeping your system updated regularly can prevent such issues from recurring in the future.
