Samsung has reportedly secured a contract to manufacture semiconductor chips for Hyundai Motor Company, following previous orders from clients including Apple and Tesla. According to a ZDNet Korea report, the agreement will provide a boost to the company’s chip sector.
Samsung Foundry will produce millions of 8-nanometer (nm) autonomous-driving chips designed in-house by Hyundai. The development of the 8nm chip is scheduled for completion by 2028, with mass production slated to begin in 2030. Hyundai selected the 8nm process for its cost-effectiveness, noting its performance is comparable to 5nm chips.
These 8nm chips are planned for use across various models in the Genesis, Hyundai, and Kia vehicle ranges. A separate order for a 5nm autonomous-driving chip is reportedly delayed until next year, with the 5nm chip reserved for high-end vehicle models. This agreement is part of Samsung’s broader effort to diversify its semiconductor client base.
