Borderlands 4’s most broken build is getting nerfed

Developers at Gearbox are engaging with the Borderlands 4 player base regarding the necessity of nerfing overpowered builds within the primarily single-player looter-shooter. The studio stated that such balance adjustments are essential to maintain the game’s challenge and to promote greater diversity in player builds. This discussion comes as the community anticipates changes to builds that utilize an “unintended interaction” which players have named “the crit knife.” Gearbox has confirmed that a nerf targeting this mechanic is planned for this week.

Borderlands 4 features numerous powerful character builds capable of inflicting extreme damage, effective even against the game’s most difficult bosses on the highest difficulty settings. The most well-known of these is the crit knife build, which Gearbox has acknowledged its awareness of. The impending series of balance changes has initiated a debate among players about the appropriateness of such adjustments in a game that lacks a player-versus-player (PvP) component. The gameplay for most users consists of solo or cooperative play, often focused on repeatedly defeating bosses to acquire powerful loot.

Builds that rely on the crit knife mechanic can eliminate bosses almost instantly, even at the game’s maximum difficulty level. This capability significantly reduces the time and effort involved in farming for loot. One side of the community debate argues that since players are not in direct competition, such overpowered builds do not negatively impact the experience and should be allowed. The opposing view is that these builds are detrimental to the overall health of the game. This type of debate is not unique to Borderlands 4, having appeared in other loot-based games like the Diablo and Destiny series over the years. For developers, it requires a careful approach to satisfy players while adhering to their design philosophy for the game.

Regarding the crit knife specifically, Associate Creative Director Grant Kao addressed the popular build, stating that it “diminishes playstyle variety” and affirmed that changes are forthcoming. “We will be adjusting it,” Kao said. “The crit knife’s potential output diminishes playstyle variety. The gun builds that use the crit knife have other options and will have more options coming soon.”

Developer Timmins also commented on the situation, reinforcing the studio’s goals. “Our intent is always to expand the number of builds, so any adjustment we make is in service of that goal,” Timmins stated. A significant portion of the player community appears to support Gearbox’s position, viewing the nerfs as a necessary measure for the long-term viability of Borderlands 4 as a live-service title. One player, in a recent interview, detailed spending 150 hours on over 3,000 boss kills to determine specific in-game drop rates, highlighting the importance of the grind for dedicated players.

On the community platform Reddit, user LascarCapable articulated this sentiment by explaining the potential negative consequences of leaving overpowered builds unchecked. “They can’t release Invincibles in a context where absurdly overpowered stuff that one-shot bosses exist,” the user wrote. “Otherwise people will just gravitate towards the few builds that can do it, the same pieces of gear, and everything else will be irrelevant. Also, it would make the game a borefest; it’s funny five minutes to one-shot bosses, but beyond that point it just removes all the fun of the main gameplay loop.”

The challenge for Gearbox lies in managing the powerful builds that players inevitably discover in a game with billions of guns and vast build possibilities, without being perceived as overly restrictive. This is a similar issue that developer Arrowhead has navigated with its cooperative shooter Helldivers 2, where it has worked to preserve the game’s challenge while ensuring it remains enjoyable for its player base. The community is now waiting for Gearbox to release a major patch that is expected to address the crit knife and other builds that the developer considers to be based on “unintended interactions.”

In other recent developments, Gearbox announced Borderlands 4 Bounty Pack 1: How Rush Saved Mercenary Day over the weekend. This is the game’s first seasonal mini-event and will introduce the previously mentioned Invincible boss, among other content. Last month, the studio also unveiled details about the first of two new Vault Hunters scheduled to be added to the game through paid Story Pack DLCs. The new character, C4SH, is planned for release in the first quarter of 2026. C4SH is described as a luck-based character whose abilities can result in him being either the most or least effective character in the game.

Additional news from last month includes a discovery by a dataminer who found evidence suggesting that a widely disliked character from Borderlands 3 was removed from Borderlands 4 and replaced late in the development cycle. When contacted about this finding, both 2K Games and Gearbox declined to comment. In separate comments, Gearbox chief Randy Pitchford remarked on the game industry, stating that if more developers had a better grasp of why players enjoy making decisions about in-game loot, “We’d have good competitors.” For players currently active in Borderlands 4, several resources have been highlighted, including an updated hourly list of SHiFT codes, a large interactive map, a character planner tool provided by Maxroll, and build recommendations from expert players.
