The flashlight function on a Samsung Galaxy phone conveniently turns the camera’s flash into a powerful torchlight. This guide will walk you through the various ways of using the flashlight on your Samsung Galaxy, from simple toggles in the quick settings panel to hands-free voice commands and brightness adjustments.

Warning: Using the flashlight for an extended period will drain your phone’s battery very quickly. Avoid leaving it on while charging, as this can cause the device to overheat.

How to use the flashlight on a Samsung Galaxy phone

Follow the methods below to activate, adjust, and control your phone’s flashlight using the quick settings panel or voice commands with your preferred digital assistant.

Method 1: Using the quick settings panel

  • Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open the Quick Settings panel.
  • Tap the Flashlight icon to turn the flashlight on or off.
  • To adjust the brightness, tap and hold the Flashlight icon to open the flashlight controls.
  • Move the slider to select a brightness level from one to five.
  • Tap the Done button to save your changes and close the controls.

Method 2: Using Google Assistant or Gemini

  • Activate the assistant by saying “Hey Google.”
  • Say “Turn on flashlight” to enable the light.
  • To adjust the brightness, you can say “Increase flashlight brightness” or “Decrease flashlight brightness.”
  • To disable the light, say “Turn the flashlight off.”

Method 3: Using Bixby

  • Press and hold the side button on your phone to activate Bixby.
  • Say the command “Turn on flashlight.”
  • To change the brightness, say “Set flashlight brightness level to 5,” replacing the number as needed.
  • Say “Turn the flashlight off” when you are finished.
Pro tip: For even faster access, you can edit your quick settings panel to move the flashlight icon to a more convenient position or add a shortcut directly to your home screen.

While it may seem like a simple utility, knowing how to quickly access and control your phone’s flashlight is incredibly useful in a variety of situations. In an emergency, such as a power outage or changing a flat tire at night, it provides an immediate and reliable light source without fumbling for a separate device.

Beyond emergencies, the flashlight is a great tool for everyday convenience. You can use it to find lost items under a couch, look for a specific port on the back of a TV, or even set it up as a makeshift desk lamp for a short time. Mastering its different activation methods ensures you have light exactly when you need it.
