This guide will teach you how to assign a special ringtone to an individual contact on your Android. The process varies slightly depending on your device, with Samsung models using the Phone app and other Androids, like the Pixel or Moto, using the Google Contacts app.

How to set a custom ringtone for a contact on Android

Depending on whether you have a Samsung Galaxy or another Android model, follow the appropriate set of instructions below to get started.

Method 1: For Samsung Galaxy users

  • Open the Phone app on your Samsung Galaxy.
  • Tap the Contacts tab to view your contact list.
  • Select the contact you wish to edit.
  • Tap the small “i” icon inside a circle to view their details.
  • Next, tap Edit at the bottom of the screen.
  • Scroll down and tap View More to expand the options.
  • Tap on the Ringtone option.
  • Select a new ringtone from the list provided.
  • Tap the back button to return to the contact edit screen, and then select Save to confirm your changes.
  • The next time this person calls, you will hear your chosen ringtone.

Method 2: For other Android phones

  • Open the Google Contacts app on your phone.
  • Tap the contact you want to assign a custom ringtone to.
  • Tap the three vertical dots menu (⋮) located in the top-right corner.
  • From the dropdown menu, tap Set ringtone.
  • Select the ringtone you want to use from the list. If you want to use a custom sound file, you can also browse and select an audio file from your phone’s storage.
  • Once you’ve made your choice, tap Save to apply the new ringtone to the contact.
Pro tip: For more personalization, you can download ringtone maker apps from the Google Play Store to trim your favorite songs into custom ringtones directly on your device.

Assigning unique ringtones to specific contacts is a simple but effective way to personalize your smartphone experience. It allows you to instantly recognize who is calling without having to look at your screen, which is especially useful when you’re driving, in a meeting, or have your hands full.

This small customization can help you prioritize calls, ensuring you don’t miss an important call from a family member, your boss, or a close friend. By setting distinct audio cues for key people in your life, you make your phone a more efficient and intuitive communication tool.
