If you want to record a video on your smartphone without the music pausing in the background, you are in luck. There are several ways to play music while recording video on both Android and iPhone devices. This guide covers a few simple methods to help you capture your moments with a custom soundtrack.

Before you start: You will need an Android or iPhone smartphone. Some methods require specific iOS versions (like iOS 13 or later), social media apps like Instagram or Snapchat, or specific third-party apps.

How to play music while recording a video on your smartphone

Here are several simple methods you can use to capture video on your Android or iPhone without stopping your background music from playing.

Method 1: Using QuickTake on an iPhone (iOS 13+)

  • First, play music from any app, such as Apple Music or Spotify, and open your iPhone’s Camera app. Stay in the default Photo Mode.
  • Press and hold the shutter button to start recording video. To record hands-free, slide your finger to the right and release it.
  • Tap the Record button again to stop recording. Your video will be saved in your Photos app. Note: QuickTake videos are recorded at a lower resolution (1440 x 1920 at 30 FPS) than standard Video Mode.

Method 2: Using Instagram on an iPhone or Android

  • Start playing your music and then open the Instagram app.
  • Swipe left or right to open the camera, then select Reel from the menu at the bottom.
  • Tap and hold the white circle button to record. For hands-free recording, tap the button once to start and again to stop. Reels can be up to 90 seconds long.
  • After recording, tap the download icon, which looks like a downward-pointing arrow, in the top right corner to save the video to your phone’s gallery.

Method 3: Using Snapchat on an iPhone or Android

  • With your music already playing, open the Snapchat app.
  • Press and hold the large white button to record a Snap. You can record for up to 60 seconds.
  • When you are finished, tap Save in the lower-left corner of the screen to save the video directly to your phone’s gallery.

Method 4: Using the Mideo app on an iPhone

  • Download and install the Mideo app for free from the App Store.
  • Play your music from your preferred app, then open Mideo.
  • Tap Start Recording to begin capturing video while your music continues to play in the background. If the music pauses, you can resume it from the Control Center.

Method 5: Using the Record Video with Music app on Android

  • Download and open the app Record Video with Music from the Google Play Store.
  • Start your music from any music player and return to the app.
  • Tap the video camera icon at the bottom of the screen to start recording. To stop, tap the same icon, which will now look like a square. The video will automatically save to your device’s gallery.

Method 6: Using screen recording on an iPhone

  • First, you must enable the feature. Go to Settings, select Control Center, and tap the + icon next to Screen Recording.
  • Start playing your music and then open the Control Center:
    • For iPhone X and later: Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen.
    • For iPhone 8 and earlier: Swipe up from the bottom edge of your screen.
  • Tap the screen recording icon, which looks like a shutter button, to begin recording your screen with the audio playing.
  • To stop, tap the red status bar at the top of your screen. You can find the recorded video in your Photos app.
Pro tip: For the best audio quality, use headphones to play your music. This prevents the phone’s microphone from picking up the sound from its own speakers, which can often result in a distorted or low-quality recording.

Learning how to record video with music playing in the background unlocks a new level of creativity for your personal videos and social media content. It allows you to instantly set the mood for a scene, whether you are capturing a scenic landscape, a workout session, or a fun moment with friends. This skill is perfect for creating quick, engaging montages without needing complex video editing software.

By using your favorite tracks as a live soundtrack, you can produce content that feels more polished and personal right from the start. It saves you time in post-production and helps you share your vision more effectively on platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, or Snapchat, making your stories more dynamic and memorable.
