In a closely timed showdown in the mobile chipset arena, Qualcomm is set to unveil its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 next week, positioning it to drive numerous flagship Android smartphones. Close on its heels, rival MediaTek has announced the launch of its next-generation flagship Dimensity processor on September 22 at 2:00 PM GMT+8 (2:00 AM ET), as revealed via a post on Weibo. While MediaTek has not disclosed specifics, industry speculation points firmly to this being the Dimensity 9500.

Reliable leaker Digital Chat Station has shed light on the anticipated specifications for the Dimensity 9500. The chipset is reportedly built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm (N3P) process and features a high-performance CPU configuration: one 4.21GHz “Travis” core based on Arm’s C1-Ultra architecture, three 3.5GHz “Alto” cores (C1-Premium), and four 2.7GHz “Gelas” cores (C1-Pro). Complementing the CPU is a Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 GPU, a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of 100 TOPS for AI tasks, and support for SME2 capabilities, enhancing multimedia and efficiency features.

No official device partners have been confirmed for the Dimensity 9500’s debut, but leaks suggest the vivo X300 series will be among the first to integrate it. Notably, these devices are expected to incorporate a custom V3 imaging chip directly into the MediaTek processor, potentially elevating photography performance. Additional adopters are anticipated to include OPPO’s Find X9 series and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S12 lineup, slated for release next year.

Performance comparisons from prior generations offer context for the upcoming competition. Testing showed the Snapdragon 8 Elite surpassing the Dimensity 9400 in CPU benchmarks. However, the MediaTek chip held its own in GPU tasks and maintained lower temperatures in devices like the OPPO Find X8 Pro, suggesting balanced efficiency that could carry over to the new models.

Looking further ahead, MediaTek has achieved a milestone by taping out its inaugural flagship processor on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process. Believed to be the Dimensity 9600, this chip is projected to enter mass production by the end of next year. According to MediaTek, the 2nm technology delivers an 18% performance uplift at equivalent power levels or a 36% reduction in power consumption at the same performance, promising significant advancements in battery life and speed for future mobile devices.
