Borderlands 4 has launched on PC ahead of its global release, quickly becoming the biggest Borderlands title ever on Steam. Within an hour of its release, the game topped Steam’s charts, surpassing all previous titles in the series in concurrent player count.

As of the latest report, Borderlands 4 boasts over 148,000 concurrent players on Steam, ranking it as the sixth most-played game on the platform. This marks a significant milestone compared to previous entries in the franchise. Borderlands 2, for instance, reached a peak of 124,678 concurrent players 13 years ago. Borderlands 3 peaked at 93,820 players five-and-a-half years ago, while Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel hit 68,238 players 10 years ago. The Game of the Year Edition of Borderlands peaked at just 23,655 players.

These figures indicate a very successful launch for Borderlands 4. IGN has published a review of Borderlands 4 and provides an updated hourly SHiFT codes list for the game. IGN also offers expert recommendations on character selection for players.

In a recent interview, IGN spoke with narrative director Sam Winkler, lead writer Taylor Clark, and managing director of narrative properties Lin Joyce about the team’s decision to craft a more grounded story for Borderlands 4.
