This guide will teach you how to create new folders on your Windows PC. You can use folders to organize files on your hard drive, desktop, or any connected storage device. There are several efficient ways to create new folders, whether you prefer using the graphical interface of File Explorer, the “Save As” function in applications like Microsoft Word, or the command line interface via Command Prompt.

Before you start: This guide applies to Windows 8, 10, and 11.

How to create a new folder on your Windows PC

Follow these instructions to create new folders using different methods on your Windows computer.

Method 1: Using File Explorer

  • Open the File Explorer. This application allows you to manage all files and folders on your computer and connected devices.
  • Navigate to the location where you want to create your folder. You can choose your desktop for quick access or a more structured location like your Documents folder.
  • Right-click a blank area within the chosen location. A menu will appear.
  • Hover over New and then click Folder. The new folder will be created immediately in that location.
    • Alternatively, you can click the new folder icon at the top-left corner of the window (if available) or use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N. A new folder will be created instantly.
  • Name the folder. You will be prompted to name it immediately. If not, you can right-click the folder and click Rename at any time.
  • Move files into the folder. You can drag and drop any file type into your new folder, including files from a flash drive, music, photos, or even other folders. To open files, double-click them.

Method 2: Using Save As

  • Open a project in an application like Microsoft Word. When saving a document in Word, you can create a new folder during the save process.
  • Click File, and then Save As. These options are typically found in the top-left corner of the application window.
  • Click New Folder. This will open a new window or dialog box.
  • Name the folder and then click OK. The new folder will be created, and you can now save your document directly into it.

Method 3: Using Command Prompt

  • Open the Command Prompt.
    • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box, then type “cmd” and press Enter.
    • If Windows 8: You can also press the Windows key + X and select Command Prompt from the menu.
  • Navigate to the desired location for the new folder. Use Command Prompt navigation commands (e.g., cd [directory name] to change directory, cd .. to go up a directory) to reach your target location.
  • Type mkdir [folder name] and press Enter. This command will create a new folder with the specified name in your current location. To open the new folder, type cd [folder name].
  • Create nested directories. You can create multiple directories nested within each other using a single command. Add the -p flag to your mkdir command.
    • For example, mkdir -p Vacation\Images\Favorites would create the Vacation directory in your current location, with the Images directory inside it, and the Favorites directory located inside the Images directory.
  • Copy files into your new folder. Once the folder is created, you can start populating it with files using Command Prompt commands or by dragging and dropping them via File Explorer.
Pro tip: Regularly organizing your files into well-named folders can significantly improve your computer’s usability and help you quickly locate documents, photos, and other data.

Why this matters

Organizing your digital files is crucial for maintaining an efficient and stress-free computing experience. Cluttered desktops and disorganized download folders can lead to wasted time searching for important documents, increased frustration, and even potential data loss if files are accidentally misplaced or overwritten.

By regularly creating and utilizing folders, you establish a logical structure for your digital life. This not only makes it easier to find what you need but also simplifies tasks like backing up data, sharing specific files, and managing storage space. A well-organized system ultimately enhances your productivity and ensures your important information is always accessible and secure.
