A cyberattack on UnitedHealth Group’s tech unit last year impacted approximately 192.7 million people, according to the U.S. health department’s website. This figure, updated on Thursday, surpasses the company’s January estimate of 190 million individuals affected.
Disclosed in February last year, this incident marks the largest healthcare data breach in U.S. history. The “Blackcat” ransomware group infiltrated Change Healthcare, causing significant disruptions in claims processing and affecting patients and providers nationwide.
A UnitedHealth spokesperson confirmed the final total of 192.7 million impacted individuals, noting that state-specific numbers would vary. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights has published this figure on its list of data breaches.
Vulnerable information compromised in the attack is believed to include health insurance member IDs, patient diagnoses, treatment information, Social Security numbers, and billing codes used by healthcare providers.
