This guide will show you how to open the Command Prompt using only your keyboard on Windows 11, 10, and 8. This is especially useful if your mouse is not working or you prefer keyboard shortcuts for efficiency.

Before you start: Ensure you have a functional keyboard.

How to open Command Prompt with your keyboard on Windows

You can launch Command Prompt with or without Administrator privileges using several keyboard shortcuts, as detailed below.

Using Windows key + R (Run menu)

  • Press the Windows key + R simultaneously. This action will open the Run window.
  • Type cmd into the Run window. This is the command to launch Command Prompt.
  • Press Enter to open a regular Command Prompt window.
    • To open with Administrator privileges: Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), use the arrow keys to highlight Yes and then Press Enter to allow access.

Using the Windows key to search

  • Press the Windows key. This will open the Search menu (or Start menu search bar).
  • Type cmd into the search bar. Command Prompt should appear as the top result.
  • Press Enter to open a regular Command Prompt window.
    • To open with Administrator privileges: Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead. If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), use the arrow keys to highlight Yes and then Press Enter to allow access.

Using Windows key + X (Power user menu)

  • Press the Windows key + X simultaneously. This action will open the Power User (or Quick Link) menu.
  • Select Command Prompt from the menu. Use the arrow keys to navigate and highlight Command Prompt.
    • Note: On newer versions of Windows 10 and 11, Command Prompt might be replaced by Windows PowerShell in this menu. If you don’t see Command Prompt, select Run and then follow the steps described in the “Using Windows Key + R” method above.
  • Press Enter. This will open a regular Command Prompt window.
Pro tip: Mastering these keyboard shortcuts can significantly speed up your workflow and provide a quick alternative if your mouse encounters issues.

Why this matters

Knowing multiple ways to access the Command Prompt using only your keyboard is a valuable skill for any Windows user. It not only enhances your efficiency but also provides a crucial workaround in situations where your mouse is unresponsive or unavailable. This capability ensures that you can always perform system diagnostics, run scripts, or execute commands vital for troubleshooting and system maintenance.

This flexibility empowers you to maintain control over your system under various circumstances, proving indispensable for IT professionals, advanced users, and anyone looking to optimize their interaction with Windows. Being adept with keyboard navigation for essential tools like Command Prompt is a hallmark of a proficient user.
