Sega has unveiled the first official gameplay video for Virtua Fighter 6, showcasing impressive graphics and fluid animations for the upcoming fighting game. The “Combat Gameplay First Look” trailer debuted during the EVO fighting game tournament, offering a glimpse into the visual and animation fidelity of the title in action.

The new video features series veteran Akira, sporting an outfit reminiscent of Donnie Yen’s Ip Man film series, facing off against the new character Stella on the Training Stage. The gameplay closely resembles the “pre-development concept video” tech demo previously shown at Nvidia’s CES event in January 2025. While that initial demo, featured during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote, presented an Akira mirror match with highly realistic and fluid animations, Sega had clarified it did not reflect the final look and feel of the game.

This latest “Combat Gameplay First Look” highlights remarkably smooth animations and seamless transitions. Notably, a slow-motion effect for missed attacks, or “whiffs,” contributes to a more realistic visual experience compared to other fighting game franchises. Fan reactions suggest a “back to basics” approach, with one YouTube commenter noting, “No infinite juggles, no crazy magic, no stupid invincible ex, no stupid rage art, no spamming rage drive, focus attacks etc. Just pure fighting, I like that.” Another fan added, “VF6 is feeling like those old martial arts films. No drive impact, no heat system, no rev system, just straight up hands. I cannot wait for this to drop.”

While the gameplay appears to emphasize a clean, fundamental fighting style, there is an indication of debilitating effects, as Stella is shown with visible damage to her face. Virtua Fighter 6 is currently under development at Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio, known for their work on the Yakuza and Like a Dragon series. There is currently no announced release window or target platforms for the game.

The Virtua Fighter series has not seen a mainline release in several years, with fans primarily sustained by mini-game appearances in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Yakuza titles and the 2021 release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. More detailed information regarding Virtua Fighter 6‘s battle system is anticipated to be revealed at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
