Samsung is poised to launch its first extended reality (XR) headset, internally codenamed Project Moohan, before the end of 2025, according to Gizmodo. This move positions Samsung to compete directly with Apple’s Vision Pro in the burgeoning XR market.
Project Moohan is expected to feature high-end specifications, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, a processor engineered for virtual reality experiences. The headset will also incorporate Micro OLED displays, hand- and eye-tracking capabilities, and an external battery pack, similar to the Apple Vision Pro.
A key differentiator for Project Moohan is its operating system. It will be the first headset to utilize Android XR, Google’s mixed-reality platform that launched in December. This integration may offer a different user experience compared to Apple’s Vision Pro, which has been praised for its UI.
The XR headset will also feature full integration of Google Gemini, Google’s multimodal AI model. This allows the AI assistant to see what the wearer sees and provide information, such as restaurant reviews or immersive Google Earth renderings, upon request.
The price of Project Moohan remains unknown. Given the premium components, it is expected to be expensive, but if Samsung can offer a lower price than Apple’s $3,500 Vision Pro, it could attract more buyers. Apple reportedly slowed down Vision Pro production in October due to weak demand, suggesting price sensitivity in the market.
Samsung hopes to make extended reality more accessible and practical. By offering similar hardware and a compelling platform at a potentially more affordable price, Samsung aims to transform XR from a niche product into a mainstream technology.
