Chrome’s AI will tell you if that store sucks

Google is enhancing its Chrome web browser with AI-generated store summaries for U.S. shoppers, aiming to streamline the purchasing process and provide greater transparency. This new feature, accessible via an icon to the left of the web address, will offer insights into a store’s reputation across key areas such as product quality, shopping experience, pricing, customer service, and returns.

Currently available in English and on desktop versions of Chrome, these summaries are compiled from reviews sourced from various partners, including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, Reputation.com, Reseller Ratings, ScamAdviser, Trustpilot, TurnTo, Yotpo, and Verified Reviews. Google has not yet confirmed the availability of this feature on mobile devices.

Google states that the primary goal of these AI summaries is to foster a safer and more efficient shopping environment. This initiative also positions Google to more effectively compete with e-commerce giant Amazon, which has already integrated AI into its shopping experience for tasks like summarizing product ratings, assisting with clothing fit, and providing product recommendations.

The introduction of these AI capabilities comes as Chrome faces increasing competition in the browser market from new AI-powered browsers like Perplexity’s Comet, The Browser Company’s Dia, and Opera Neon. Google is actively exploring ways to integrate AI more deeply into Chrome, including the development of an AI agent capable of controlling the browser to perform actions on behalf of users. Furthermore, Chrome recently added support for Google’s Gemini AI assistant for subscribers.

This update is part of Google’s broader strategy to evolve into a comprehensive modern shopping platform. The company has already leveraged AI to help users locate products, receive personalized recommendations, and virtually try on clothing. Google is also developing tools for improved price tracking, shopping in its AI Mode, and AI-powered agentic checkout. The latter two features were announced at this year’s Google I/O developer conference, with outfit and room inspiration in AI Mode slated for release this fall.
