Google is rolling out AI-generated summaries in Discover, its personalized news feed within the Google Search app, for U.S. users on iOS and Android. These summaries, replacing traditional headlines and logos from single publishers, are similar to AI Overviews in Search and display overlapping icons indicating the number of cited stories. Tapping these reveals contributing articles, and users see a three-line preview before expanding. A warning notes these summaries are AI-generated and “can make mistakes.”
Confirmed by Google as a full launch, not a test, this feature focuses on trending lifestyle topics like sports and entertainment to help users decide what pages to visit. This follows other AI features, like AI Overviews and Audio Overviews, raising concerns among publishers due to reduced website traffic and referrals, as AI extracts information directly, lessening the need for users to click on original sources.
