Meta has reportedly hired Ruoming Pang, Apple’s head of AI models, marking another significant acquisition for CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s new AI superintelligence unit, according to Bloomberg. Pang previously led the team responsible for training the AI foundation models powering Apple Intelligence and other on-device AI features.

While Apple’s AI models have faced criticism for being less capable than those from rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, Pang’s expertise in designing compact, on-device AI models could be valuable to Meta. His departure is seen by some as potentially indicative of further exits from Apple’s AI division.

Pang joins a growing roster of AI talent recruited by Meta, including leaders from Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Safe Superintelligence.
